Cooke City, Montana is a historical mining town and is home to around 100 residents in the winter and booms in the summer to thousands including summer residents and tourists. Cooke City is not your typical “sleepy” small town, however it still has that residual wild feel of an old mining town.
If the fishing is bad (which isn’t likely), you can always duck into one of the local taverns and enjoy a whiskey, a beer, or whatever might wet your whistle or just enjoy the sunset from one of the decks of the cabins, breathing in the colors that sit just on top of Baronette Mountain. There is hiking, biking, wildlife watching, and pretty much anything you would just rather do outside really!
Our channel selection in the rooms is basic and WiFi is limited because if you are visiting, tv and internet should be last on your list of things to do. If you love the mountains, you will love Cooke City and be careful, you might just get Cooke City Fever. I haven’t been able to shake it since 1995. Not to scare anyone, but Cooke City Fever defined is “the over-whelming yearn to be in the valley of Cooke City. It can be sometimes uncontrollable and your thirst for outside beauty and great people is almost insatiable!”
Yellowstone Park
Located right on the edge of Yellowstone the High Country is the perfect launching lap for a once in a life time adventure. With everything from geysers to bison, Yellowstone Park is a outdoor enthusiast's dreamland. Take a drive around the Grand Loop and keep your eye open for charismatic megafauna, like Grizzly Bears. Stop at Old Faithful and watch one of earth's wonders erupt as if on clock work. What ever fills the bill, remember to take your time and soak in everything that you can.
Fishing
Phenomenal fishing is found around town, in the mountains or in the park! Enjoy world renowned fly-fishing on the Lamar river of Yellowstone National Park. Permits are available in town. In the spring the rivers can become blown out, so head up to one of the thousands of lakes in the Beartooths and Absarokas and still manage to get that fishing fix.
Hiking
With over 900 miles of hiking trails in Yellowstone and over 700 miles in the Absaroka-Beartooth Wilderness, Cooke City is nestled in the middle of a hiker’s dream. Whether you are headed out for a quick day hike or a multi-day backpacking trip, you will easily be able to surround yourself with wildflowers, crisp, clear waterways, and mountainous views for miles. There are books and maps available locally to show you the way right out your motel room door.
You can never be reminded enough: We are in bear country! Always hike in groups of three or more, carry your bear spray and know how to use it!
